Kim offers ecological garden design grounded in the plants, soils and conditions of Waiheke Island. With a BSc in ecology and a diploma in landscape design, she combines an understanding of how ecosystems function with practical design skills, creating gardens that look good and work with the island's natural systems.
Her approach focuses on locally appropriate native species chosen to thrive in salt-laden winds, dry summers and varied terrain. Each project begins with the site: aspect, hydrology, exposure and existing vegetation. From there, Kim develops planting plans that establish well, need less water and maintenance over time, and suit the character of the property. Working at the nursery gives her direct access to locally sourced plants and first-hand knowledge of how they perform once in the ground.
Her designs support biodiversity as well as beauty, providing food and habitat for native birds, lizards and invertebrates while helping to stabilise soil and manage runoff. Whether the project is a new planting, the replacement of struggling or weedy gardens, or the restoration of native bush around a home, the aim is a resilient, low-input landscape connected to the wider island ecosystem.
